How to face what is happening with the West and Islam, and with cultural diversity issues in general?

Here's my approach.

First, I ask: Just give me the facts, instead of pelting me with opinions. I also acknowledge how hard it is for humans in general to recognize facts.

Then I look at some facts.

I face the West, which I see has shifted from self-righteousness to a state of serious confusion. Everything is equal, for many people - every opinion, culture and religion, no matter how different, including how morally different.

At least a generation of students has had this drilled into them - and most have come to believe this. So I have had college classes where every black student has held that if slavery is right or wrong is a matter of opinion, and all opinions are equal!! (I thought that at least black students would not believe all opinions were equal when it came to slavery. I was wrong.)

To counter that Western mass backing away from making any judgments, I delve into what may be the most important of current ethical issues, what is also a vital current issue in education: establishing an ethical standard, a universal ethical standard. I posit that what's best is a reality-based ethics that starts from what we need to live well, to flourish.

Over and over, I look at the West, which I see as stuck in an Age of Secrecy - of secrets it's keeping from itself, an age also of self-doubt and, perhaps most of all, fear - fear hiding behind rigid assertions about everything being equal. What, other than fear, could have anyone holding an opinion like that?

A final big question: how do we get heard, if what we're saying is not what most people are saying (and hearing)?

That's a huge question. And in fact, a major impetus for creating the teleseminar series, Understanding Islam, Understanding the West is the attempt to get people exploring and expressing inconvenient truths more heard, rather than widely dismissed without being given a hearing.
