Nonie Darwish started life
in a Muslim family, a Muslim culture -
and learned to hate non-Muslims, especially Jews.
It was always us against them.

It has been a long journey for her,
starting with just feeling something did not make sense,
to choosing to leave Egypt for the United States,
to a 17-year journey before she finally left Islam,
and then more time before she spoke out,
wrote and published,
even under her own name.

Never again, she says.
She never again will let herself be imprisoned
in a culture of fear and hate.
